Vesturbæjarlaug Swimming Pool

Vesturbæjarlaug is a swimming pool in the western part of Reykjavík that has been among the most popular pools in the country since it opened in 1961. The pool consists of a 25‑meter outdoor pool with five lanes and a children’s pool that is connected to the main pool. Hot tubs were part of the pool’s design from the beginning, which was an innovation at the time, inspired by Snorralaug in Reykholt. This innovation later became a model for other Icelandic swimming pools. Today there are five hot tubs on site with different temperatures, including a large hot tub with massage jets and a cold tub. A wading pool, steam bath and sauna are also available. In 2014 a large hot tub with massage jets was put into use and has become a fixed feature of many guests’ visits. The building itself has changed over the years, with new outdoor changing facilities, improved accessibility and renovations that have enhanced the amenities. The pool was originally built with funds raised in a fundraising campaign and initiative to improve facilities in the neighborhood. The financing came, among other sources, from collections among residents and special contributions. In the first years after opening, the pool was also used as a venue for unconventional events, including fashion shows of swimwear along the poolside. The history of the pool reflects its role as a gathering place. It has long been a focal point for local residents, a place where people meet to relax and spend time together. For many inhabitants of Vesturbær, a visit to the pool is an inseparable part of the day, whether for swimming, relaxing in the hot tubs, or simply discussing national affairs.
