Þelamörk Swimming Pool

The swimming pool at Þelamörk is located by Þelamerkurskóli in the rural area of Hörgárdalur, about 20 km southwest of Akureyri, and belongs to Hörgársveit. The pool, which bears the name Jónasarlaug in honor of Jónas Hallgrímsson, was built in the years 1943–1945 by local youth associations and handed over to the school when it began operating in 1963. A sports hall was built next to the pool in 1991, and in 2008 extensive renovations were carried out on the pool. In the area there is a heated outdoor pool and a separate children’s pool, as well as a waterslide and a water mushroom in a shallow play area for younger children. By the pool there are several hot tubs and a cold tub, along with indoor facilities where you go down to changing rooms and showers connected to the sports hall. The swimming pool serves both the students of Þelamerkurskóli and the residents of Hörgársveit as sports and swimming facilities, and is also used by guests and travelers passing through.
