Sundhöll Ísafjarðar

Sundhöll Ísafjarðar is one of the most impressive swimming pools in the Westfjords and has been in constant use since it was opened in 1946. The pool is a 16-meter indoor pool, with a hot tub and a cold tub beside it. The building was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, the State Architect, and is considered one of the more notable public buildings from the mid-20th century. It is located on Austurvegur, in a central area of Ísafjörður town. In the same building there is a gymnasium, which is used for general sports activities and teaching. In the basement of the building, the youth center Djúpið has facilities. Over the years, the building has served many different roles, including as the town library and as a temporary preschool department. From the beginning, the swimming hall has been an important teaching pool for elementary school children and in earlier times a training venue for the swimming division of Vestri. At the entrance you can see two statues in swimwear, works by the sculptor Martinus Simson, which represent the special role the swimming pool has played in the town’s life for decades.
