Skeiðalaug Swimming Pool

Skeiðalaug is an outdoor swimming pool in Brautarholt by national road no. 30 and was opened on 15 November 1975. It was designed by architect Jes Einar Þorsteinsson and is 16.68 meters long and 8 meters wide. Originally the pool had one hot tub and a steam bath, but in the years 2023–2024 extensive renovations were carried out, during which the building was refurbished, the steam bath was replaced with a dry sauna, a new cold tub was installed indoors, and two large hot tubs were added, one with massage jets. An infrared sauna was also installed. Today Skeiðalaug has become a diverse wellness pool with a swimming pool, hot tubs, a cold plunge, a dry sauna and an infrared sauna. In the area there is also a sports field, a preschool, a community center, accommodation and a campsite that has facilities inside the swimming pool building. The background to the construction was connected both to schooling and to community development in the district. Jón Eiríksson of Vorsabær, the chairman of Skeiðahreppur, was one of the main driving forces behind the project. The aim was to strengthen Brautarholt School by building a school swimming pool, and the project received both state funding and support from the Youth Association. The swimming pool has since been important for swimming, social life and health promotion in the municipality.
