Jarðböðin við Mývatn

The Mývatn Nature Baths are located at Jarðbaðshólar by Route 1, about 4 km from Reykjahlíð in the Mývatn district. The area is linked to a long tradition of hot earth baths, and the geothermal energy has been used there since the Middle Ages. Today, the Nature Baths are one of the main tourist attractions in North Iceland and offer a unique bathing experience in the volcanic landscape of the Mývatn region. The facilities consist of a man-made lagoon with mineral-rich geothermal water, hot tubs, and natural steam baths. In 2026, new and extensive facilities were opened, adding a new lagoon bar, a steam cave, a walking path through a fissure, and increased space for guests. Three different types of admission are also available, offering varied experiences. Indoors there are changing rooms with lockers, showers, and outdoor changing areas. The water is alkaline, rich in minerals, and usually 36–40°C. The Nature Baths play an important role in the tourism of the Mývatn area and are built on centuries-old bathing traditions in the region. By the lagoon is the restaurant Kaffi Kvika, with views over the bathing area and the surrounding nature. The new facilities were designed to blend into the landscape and draw inspiration from the earth, steam, water, and lava that characterize the Mývatn region.
