Laugarvatn Fontana

Laugarvatn Fontana is a spa at Laugarvatn where guests can enjoy natural steam, hot pools, and bathe directly in the lake itself. In the area there are steam rooms built directly over a hot spring where steam from the geothermal heat rises into the space, with temperatures fluctuating between 40°C and 50°C and high humidity. The steam has been considered to possess healing powers. Next to the steam rooms is a Finnish sauna with temperatures ranging from 80°C to 90°C and lower humidity. There are also several hot pools on site, Lauga, Sæla and Viska, which differ in depth and temperature. In the pools there are both areas for relaxing quietly and others that are better suited for chatting and playing. From the uppermost hot tub, Viska, there is a unique view over Laugarvatn and the surrounding nature. From the pool area it is also possible to go out into Laugarvatn itself from a small pier by the pools. This is even possible in winter, as hot springs by the shore keep the water warm near land. It is possible to cool off in the lake between sessions in the hot pools or steam rooms. Alternating baths of this kind are considered to have positive effects on health and well-being. On the beach at Fontana you can find hot sand which in some cases is so hot that it is possible to bake rye bread in a pot that is buried in the ground.
