Krossneslaug Swimming Pool

Krossneslaug is a concrete outdoor pool by the seaside in Strandir, just north of Norðurfjörður in Árneshreppur. The pool was inaugurated on July 5, 1954 and measures 12.5 x 6 meters. The hot water in the pool comes from springs that flow directly into it and maintain a steady and comfortable temperature. The pool stands just a few meters from the ocean and offers a unique, unobstructed view out over the Arctic Ocean. From the parking area there is a footpath down to the changing rooms. In summer, when the road to Árneshreppur is open, the place attracts both travelers and locals, but in winter it is generally inaccessible. Seals and birdlife can be seen along the shore, and sometimes whales or dolphins may even be spotted in the distance. In spring 2021, extensive renovation work began on the facilities. The changing-room building was rebuilt almost from the ground up, and maintenance was carried out on the pool itself. The cost amounted to over 50 million ISK, and those who wish to support the development are directed to the donation account of the youth association Leifur heppni. Unlike many other swimming pools in the Westfjords, Krossneslaug is heated with natural geothermal energy, which is rare in this oldest and coldest region of the country. The pool’s location makes it one of the most distinctive swimming experiences in Iceland, where nature, rural culture, and relaxation meet in a peaceful setting at the end of the road. Krossneslaug is run with the support of volunteers and entry is at your own risk. The facilities are simple but tidy, and the pool is held in high regard as a place with strong roots in local culture and history.
